Finnish sledge hikes are the best way to explore winter!

A Finnish sledge hike is perfect for enjoying the outdoors during the colder winter months.

The Finnish sled has gone through a great transformation and looks sleek and modern. We use new Finnish sleds on light aluminum frames for an even better experience.

We’ll be sledding along snowy nature trails, hiking paths, or even across frozen lakes.

If Lake Pühajärv is properly frozen and the weather allows, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to sledge between its islands — familiar to you from your canoeing trip.

Finnish sledge hikes are for everyone, regardless of fitness level. No physical preparation or prior experience is required!

  • Warm, windproof clothing (preferably with a hood), a hat to cover your ears and neck, semi-high hiking boots, warm socks, gloves, and a scarf.
  • Also, a small backpack for personal belongings.
  • We suggest leaving alcohol out of your kit.
  • It’s a chairsledge with long iron runners, traditionally used to move quickly over hard winter roads or thin snowy ice.
  • The Finnish kicksledge is often associated with fishermen on frozen lakes or with country folk on snowy gravel roads. Originally, the first users of the sledge were coastal people. However, modern-day road salt and heavy traffic have made it less useful, even in rural areas.
  • In the 1960s, the kicksledge (known as *soome kelk*, *potku*, *potkukelkku*, *finskie sanki*, *potkuri*, *soomik*, *tõukekas*) was a common form of transportation. Nowadays, it has almost become unique. Over time, the kicksledge has undergone major improvements and now looks sleek and modern. Product development has made it attractive to people of all ages. Keywords are lightness, comfort, ergonomic design, and new technical solutions that allow it to move easily over snow and ice — even at speeds of up to 40km per hour.
  • The main risks are related to speed and slippery surfaces. Participants will be taught how to manage the sledge, slow down, and gently fall if necessary. When hiking on frozen bodies of water, we will reduce risks by following a predetermined route and using safety equipment.
